How to MakeYour Natural Fragrance Last Longer
I get asked this a lot, usually by someone who’s just discovered Amka or Usiku and fallen for it the way I fell for these scents when I first started blending them. They’ll say something like, “I love it, but by the afternoon I can barely smell it on myself anymore.” I understand that worry completely, especially when you’re used to synthetic sprays that practically announce themselves from across a room. Natural fragrance behaves differently, and once you understand why, you can get so much more out of every bottle. Here’s exactly how I make my own natural fragrance last longer, and how you can too.
Apply to Your Pulse Points
The first thing I always tell people is to apply fragrance to pulse points. Your wrists, the inside of your elbows, behind your ears, the base of your throat. These are the warmest points on your body, and warmth is what releases fragrance. I learned this properly when I was working with the perfumers on Amka and Usiku, watching how the notes actually unfolded on skin rather than on paper. A natural oil needs your body heat to bloom the way it’s meant to.
Apply Fragrance Straight After Showering
Timing matters too. The best moment to apply any fragrance, natural or otherwise, is right after a warm shower, while your skin is still slightly damp and your pores are open. That’s when it absorbs properly instead of just sitting on the surface. I do this every single morning without fail. It’s become as automatic as brushing my teeth, and it makes a real difference to how long Amka stays with me through the day.
Moisturise Before You Apply Your Scent
Moisturising underneath your fragrance helps enormously as well. Dry skin doesn’t hold scent nearly as well as skin that’s properly hydrated. If you’re already using the Amka or Usiku body oil, that’s honestly the perfect base. Apply the oil first, let it settle for a minute, then layer your eau de toilette on top. You’ll notice the difference immediately.
Store Your Fragrance Properly
Where you store your bottle matters more than people realise. Keep it away from direct sunlight and away from the bathroom if you can, since heat and humidity break down natural oils over time. I keep mine on my dressing table, out of any direct light, and it keeps its character properly right through to the last drop.
Don’t Rub Your Wrists Together
One last thing I always say. Don’t rub your wrists together after applying. It feels natural, I know, but it actually breaks down the top notes and changes how the fragrance develops. Let it dry in the air instead, and letit tell its own story on your skin.
Natural fragrance asks a little more attention of you than a synthetic spray does, but that’s part of what makes it feel so personal. It’s not shouting at everyone around you. It’s something closer to you, unfolding slowly, changing gently through the day, and I think that’s exactly as it should be.
